DHANBAD: The Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, has organised a workshop on the, "Principles of Modern Day Safety in Mining from May 23 to 25. Rahul Guha, the director general of mining safety, kick started the exchange by drawing an outline about the conditions that prevail in underground mining today and the safety hazards that miners have to contend with.
A road map on what needs to be done to prevent accidents, will be drawn up at the end of the three day workshop and submitted to the mining ministry.
ISM has been organizing seminars and workshops on topics of national importance for several years in the past, which have provided valuable recommendations for the development of the mining and allied industries. The present workshop has grown out of the Recommendations of the International Conference on Health and Safety Management in the Mining Industry’ 2015 organised by the ISM, Dhanbad.
Safety and Health are two key areas, where existing systems needed to be examined, upgraded and/or replaced. Nowhere is this more true than the coal mining industry. Led by CIL, it has embarked on a massive expansion to fuel up the rapidly growing Indian economy. At the same time, it is necessary that the principles of modern Safety and Health management, like Quality management, are understood in depth by the industry, so that the journey of modernization and expansion is holistic, safe and healthy and the well being of the stake holders, particularly the workforce and the community are not sacrificed at the altar of growth, it was said.
The workshop is supported by the the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) and various leading mining companies.
